Your Opportunity as the Manager, Government & Industry Relations

Support the development and execution of The J.M. Smucker Company's Government Relations strategy and activities in its Washington, D.C. location. Play a pivotal role in executing our strategy through strong collaboration and research, along with facilitating lobbying and advocacy activities.

Location: Washington, DC Office

Work Arrangements: Hybrid, Team follows Congressional Calendar and attends variety of receptions, events, other business related activities, and travel.

In this role you will:

  • Monitor proposed legislation by tracking legislation through the full process including bill introduction, committee hearings, floor action and final passage; solicit input from internal and external stakeholders to understand impact; and collaborate through trade association representatives and subject matter experts to optimize laws and regulatory rulemaking that impact the Company
  • On strategic issues of impact, lead federal lobbying activity by advocating Smucker's position with stakeholders and supports state lobbying activity
  • Develop and communicate government relations updates, talking points, background, and support materials for corporate and senior leadership with content based on current legislative and policy action
  • Represent the Company with national, industry trade associations and organizations engaging on public policy issues important to the Company's business interests
  • Support PAC giving strategy, planning and activity
  • Develop and create department materials & collateral, provide general administrative, logistical, and special project support
  • Interact with elected officials, trade and industry representatives, with primary focus on Federal Government Relations and support on State Government Relations on an as needed basis and lead Republican Governors Association (RGA) engagement strategy

What we are looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree inPolitical Science, Public Policy, Government, Political Communication or related field
  • 5+ years of public policy or political experience working in legislative or administrative branch, coalitions, trade associations or corporate government relations.
  • Federal experience and engagement with the Administration and/or Congressional Leadership
  • Ability to anticipate impacts to the business with matters being debated in federal and state policy arenas with an understanding of the legislative process
  • Ability to reach out to a wide array of functional groups across the organization to gather information needed
  • Experience creating factual, relevant, and easily understandable talking points, policy briefs and other messaging
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with top level management and external stakeholders
  • Proven networking and relationship building skills
  • Strong strategic management, project management, and planning skills
  • Desireto affect change within an organization
  • Must be willing to travel with overnight travel expectations

Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:

  • LDA/LD-2 Reporting
  • Staff experience in legislative and/or executive branches of government
  • Corporate Government Relations experience
  • Experience in the CPG Industry, Food & Beverage
  • Experience with legislative tracking software
