OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB

This is correctional work, on an assigned shift, in the custody, supervision and non-professional counseling of male and female adult inmates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB

Directs inmate activities in cell blocks, housing units, work areas, dining and recreational areas. Inspects inmate living areas for cleanliness, contraband, or stolen goods and escape implements, plans or procedures. Observes inmate behavior looking for signs of duress, disorderly conduct, or violation of policy and/or regulations. Quells disturbances using methods and tactical skills learned through Facility training, and reports inmates involved. Informs inmates of rules and regulations, changes in rules and regulations, and answers any questions. Administers first aid to inmates or to other employees when necessary; ensures that injured person receives appropriate medical attention. Supervises dining room activity, ensures inmates are fed in orderly fashion, and maintains security during meal periods. Assists other officers in emergency and non-emergency situations, reacting quickly as the situation warrants. Controls access to and egress from main facility; inmate cell blocks, or housing units. Operates electronic equipment, documents information, and performs other duties required. Signs visitors in and out of Jail, visiting areas, and ensures that inmates do not receive contraband. Checks outside the buildings and observes the complex, ensuring that there are no escapes, fires, or suspicious persons. Patrols facility and/or housing areas to ensure there are no fire hazards or suspicious occurrences and to ensure inmate living areas are safe and secure. Attends training sessions as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direct supervision from shift supervisor and work is reviewed for adherence to policy and procedures.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Supervises inmates numbering from one (1) to as many as seventy-two (72) depending upon duty assignment.

CRITICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB

The following information describes the physical activities that are performed by the employees in the Correctional Officer's job classification. Must be able to continuously alternate between walk, sit, and stand between at least 32 times per shift. Must be able to frequently ascend and descend a minimum of 15 steps at a time, at least 25 times per shift. Must be able to occasionally stretch as far as possible while reaching overhead or in front from left or right. Must be able to frequently bend and twist at the waist from either the left or right side while standing, squatting, kneeling or seated. Must be able to frequently squat, kneel, and crawl. Must be able to infrequently move quickly, starting and stopping suddenly, while jogging or running at full speed for 20 to 100 yards. Must be able to infrequently resist force during physical altercation with another person and apply force against another person through tactical maneuvers learned through the Facility's training program. Must be able to lift or assist in lifting a person with or without force, with or without resistance, infrequently while the person is lying prone on the floor, in a seated position, or standing. Body mass being maneuvered may range from 20 to 50 lbs. with assistance and 110 to 300 lbs. without assistance. Must be able to occasionally secure a person through tactical maneuvers with or without resistance and with or without assistance by pushing or pulling a person with or without force against a wall or down to the floor. Body mass being maneuvered may range from 20 to 50 lbs. with assistance and 110 to 300 lbs. without assistance. Must be able to occasionally push or pull loaded/unloaded carts and food trucks with wheels (330 lbs. unloaded, 600 lbs. to 650 lbs. loaded) for distances of 15 to 100 yards, exerting a minimum force of 93 lbs. while pushing the carts. Must be able to occasionally lift items that weigh up to 30 lbs. from floor to waist and from waist to chest. Must be able to occasionally maintain balance on a flat service or ascending/descending stairs, while carrying items with weights up to 30 lbs. on right and/or left side, gripping with one or both hands. Filled food trays weigh approximately 4 lbs. and may be carried in both hands while ascending or descending stairs. Must frequently demonstrate dexterity and fine motor skills of limbs, hands, and fingers to operate equipment and document information. Must be able to occasionally alternate between walk, jog, and run over uneven surfaces. Must be able to occasionally sit for continuous periods of time as required to satisfy training. WORKING CONDITIONS Works indoors with adequate lighting, fair ventilation and fluctuating temperatures. May be required to work out of doors in adverse weather. Works with average exposure to noise, stress, but with frequent disruptions. Normal exposure to dust and dirt. Works daily with potentially volatile, hostile, or aggressive inmates. Subject to working beyond normal eight-hour tour of duty. May be required to work out of doors on uneven ground or surfaces. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, understand and follow instructions received. Includes all physical requirements as identified above, under Critical Demands of Job. Must demonstrate emotional stability. Must be able to cope with physical and mental stress of position. Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a disturbance or other problems within the Jail. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and to concentrate on work. QUALIFICATIONS Must, at a minimum, be a high school graduate (or have obtained a GED certificate). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Must be able to speak and understand the English language and to follow and provide oral and written instructions. Must possess initiative and problem solving skills. Must possess knowledge of basic first-aid practices. Must possess the ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work with inmates, employees, co-workers, and the staff of other agencies. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to inmate information and records. Must possess the ability physically defend self and others. Must possess the ability to remember names and faces. Must possess the ability to qualify with the use of firearms.
